This is more than just picspam. This is spam. I've been meaning to talk about a few different things, but fighting off the plague last week really sapped most of my brain power. So, for your edification, here are some random things from me.

THE PLAGUE

I am feeling better finally. The hacking cough and laryngitis is hanging on, but I survived a full night of work last night. Even though I could use it to get caught up on things and for monetary reasons, I will not be asking for overtime this week. I'm still sleeping nine to ten hours a night, so overtime would probably just set me back health wise.

Ultimately, the doctor decided it was a virus, so there really wasn't much they could do for me other than tell me to get lots of rest and drink lots of fluids. It was all sinus and upper respiratory stuff which was not fun. What's worse is that it was spreading. One of my roommates got it and some people at work got it. Not sure who started it, but it was definitely not fun.

WATCHMEN

Before I got sick, I did get to go see this in the theater. It was pretty amazing. I loved the casting of pretty much all the characters (though I expected Ozymandias to be prettier, the actor still pulled it off very well) and I was delighted with how faithful they were to the original graphic novel.

Some things were changed, but most of it was either very minor or in the case of the one big thing they changed, kinda important. To be completely vague and avoid spoilers, things happen at the end that are world changing. In the comic, what happens is tied to many subplots and minor characters that couldn't possibly fit in the movie. Not to mention what happens is barely plausible in the comics and I never believed that the general public would buy it if they stuck with it. What they did to change it fit seamlessly with the movie and made sense. It also didn't change any of the results which was key.

It's definitely an R-rated movie with all the sex and violence that should suggest. Don't go expecting Iron Man or X-men. That's not what this story is about. It's still a damn good movie, though.

LOST

Since I was sick, there reached a point where I couldn't sit in front of the computer anymore. I couldn't concentrate enough to play or write, so I finally gave up and lugged my DVD player into my bedroom and settled in to watch some television.

I've loved Lost since I first started watching it. It's got a lot I love about serialized storytelling and ensemble casts. For some reason, though, I was dragging my feet watching Season Four.

The first season was fantastic. The second season struggled a bit as they introduced the tailies, some of whom worked better than others, but ultimately just confused things more. Third season was better, but still had some rough spots, especially with the Paulo and Nikki addition. Talk about a mistake. With the fourth season, though, you could tell things had changed. The writers and producers had finally hammered out a deal with ABC where they have an end date.

In some ways, I find it interesting comparing Babylon 5 and Lost. The two are very different shows with different feels, but they're both excellent examples of serialized storytelling with an ensemble cast. Babylon 5 was able to build slowly into its story arc, but then ran into trouble when they weren't sure they would have enough time to finish everything. As a result, the pace of the fourth season and then the unexpected addition of a fifth season feel forced. The show still worked, but you could see where the producers and the writers had to struggle to adapt.

With Lost, it's almost the exact opposite issue. Being a prime network show, the producers and writers hedged their bets in the first couple of seasons. They tried to keep their mind trippy storyline moving forward, but tried not to give too much away. They were a successful show, but they still had the network's headsman axe hanging over their heads. By the time they were finishing up the third season, though, they managed to wrangle a deal out of ABC that gives them an end point to actually END the show. It also gave them freedom to start going whole hog with some of their plotlines without worry about the network freaking out. This showed in Season Four.

Admittedly, Season Four is short because of the writer's strike, but there wasn't a single episode that didn't completely grab me. I also really liked most of the new characters they introduced into the story. Miles was especially intriguing, and I hope they do more with him in Season Five. I also really liked Keamy, despite his sadistic nature. Something about the big scary man with the laid back voice and boyish smile just grabbed me.

Anyway, if you enjoyed Lost, but hesitated at following it because it seemed like it was getting nowhere, I think you'll be pleased with the fourth season.

SUPERNATURAL

Okay, so I'm a little slow. De and Jamie and Doc and Stacie have all been telling me to watch Supernatural. I kept saying I would, but had dragged my feet picking up the DVDs. Being sick was finally the excuse I needed to have someone get me the first season so I could lay in bed and watch it.

I'm hooked.

It was pretty cool seeing where Dean's original inspiration came from as well as finally getting to see what everyone was talking about. I love the chemistry between the actors playing Dean and Sam. You can totally buy that they're brothers and would do anything for each other, even if they'll constantly rib one another.

There are a couple of minor issues I have with it, but they're all pretty minor.

- Vancouver can look like a lot of places, but Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas really aren't some of them. Every time they say they're someplace specific, I generally look at the scenery and go, "Yep. Pacific Northwest." Part of this is probably my own geographic snobbery since my job lets me actually SEE these places on a pretty thorough basis. The wilderness in Colorado doesn't really look all that much like the wilderness in the Pacific Northwest. It's not nearly that WET.

- If the boys are traveling around the country, why does it always look like they're staying in the same seventies decorated motel room? I know the budget was probably limited, but I started recognizing features of their standard hotel room.

- SHUT YOUR CAR WINDOWS! I mean, dudes. You've got a trunk full of more weapons and spiritual paraphernalia than you can shake a stick at and you're walking away from your car with the windows left open? You're just asking for someone to steal your car. Your sexy, vintage car with a perfect paint job. DUDES. Use a little common sense.

Like I said, these are really minor issues. They haven't stopped me from loving many of the episodes and loving the dialogue. I'm really looking forward to seeing where the show is going and how they're going to ramp up the storylines.

SIM STUFF (INCLUDING PICSPAM)

I feel like I'm so behind. I've been sitting on 4.11 for weeks now. I tried writing last week while I was sick, but that wasn't happening. I've tried picking it up again now, but it's still not happening. I think I may need to skip the scene I'm on and get to something else to get some forward movement on the story. I'm not making any promises as to when it will be done, but I'm not giving up.

Anyway, here's some picspam.

Cecil, is that you? )

It's that time again! Everyone needs their weekly dose of Picspam, right?

"How lame can you be!? Calling this Sunday Picspam and then posting it on a Tuesday. God, can't you do anything right? How could you possibly be MY author?? I don't even get a starring role, when I'm obviously the most important sim in your whole hood. How much of a loser could you be?"

Ah, Mercedes. What a spoiled brat you are... )
orikes: (SexyShoe)
There's not too much to report in this belated Sunday Picspam, but I did do a little bit of playing. Mostly I waffled between knowing I should be working on the update and wanting to play. So I didn't really do much of either.

What playing I did do, though, involved lots and lots of kid parties.

As Nanny Kendal can attest, they were more than a little chaotic... )

These are the children born into the Fifth Generation of the Pseudo Legacy (with a couple of exceptions noted below). With each notation is the lineage of that child, their personality, aspiration, and any other notes. I'll be updating their portraits as they age and adding any additional kids born.

(I've been meaning to do something like this for a while, but rather than focusing on just the teens, I figured I'd do one for the whole generation that I can keep updated even as they grow up and take over. I may also do one of these for the previous generations.)

NOTE: There are spoilers in here since this includes the kids as they are currently in the game rather than as they are in the story. There are a few surprise babies in here.

Presenting, GENERATION FIVE! )
orikes: (streaker)
Hey look! It's a two-for-one special! You're getting Sunday Picspam combined with Behind the Scenes "footage"! Okay, so maybe it's not that special and some of you would have preferred to get Behind the Scenes stuff and then also get Sunday Picspam. I figured it would be easier just to combine the two.

I was actually hoping to cover more in 4.10, but when I pulled the pictures I already had and estimated what I would need for plotty scenes and filler pics, I had over 220 slides. For most people this would mean a double update, but not for me. I've tried to do the double update thing and I fail every time. Once I've got one half finished, I can't wait. I upload it and then take a week or so to get the other half done. 4.11 will be coming before the end of the month, but I'm going to be gone next weekend and I still need to do some of the staged scenes.

So, on to the blather about 4.10!

First up, Boy's Night Out! )

So, I'm home sick today. It's not major, but I was feeling crappy enough that I decided to call in. After puttering around (watching the inaugural address, finding more cool cc I didn't really need, etc.) I cornered Sarah and asked her to tell me how to do recolors of paintings. She made me an awesome wedding present for Miranda and Dean, so I knew she knew how to do it.

See, with the rebuild, there were a few things lost that I needed to replace. Namely...

... the generational portraits.

Here's what we have now, thanks to Sarah... )

I've been working on 4.10, seeing what I have and what I still need as far as pictures go. Right now, it's either going to be a double update or it's going to be split into 4.10 and 4.11 which will go up relatively soon after one another. There's a dozen or so scenes or pictures I need to fill it out, but none of them should be particularly complicated. Hopefully I'll be done with pictures by this weekend and writing by next week. There's still no guarantee I'll have an update out by the end of the month, but I'll certainly be trying.
orikes: (miranda)
Picspam is a little light this week. I spent some time going through the pictures I had and pulling the ones I think I'm going to need for the next update. That was then compared to my outline, so I know what scenes I still need to shoot. There's still quite a bit to go, but I'm fairly happy with what I have so far.

A little bit of what I was doing involved playing my simself's house. It felt wrong without any cats, so my simself now has simpet versions of Malakhi and Pashenko.

More ramblings about simpets and Headmasters within... )

It's a girl!

And Elijah thinks his wife is hot when she's giving birth.

Everyone give a warm welcome to Josephine Legacina. I really wanted a girl since Josephine was the only name I had left that I really wanted to use. I was fully intending on cheating to get a girl, but they gave her to me on first try.

I have no idea what Jo looks like yet, other than she has the expected black hair and dark blue eyes, just like her siblings. Like Oz, she also got S2 instead of S3 like Louise. As far as recessives go, she's got Shelby's green eyes and ... RED HAIR!!!!!! I can't tell you how much I flipped when I saw that.

As far as personality goes, she's completely different from her siblings. She's a Gemini, very similar to her father. 5/10/9/7/3. The only difference between her and Elijah are the playful points. He has only 3.

YAY! Sorry for the pixel baby spam, but I've been waiting for her since before the 'hood blew up. It's so nice to finally get her into the house. She'll also be the last baby for Elijah and Shelby unless they throw me a late life lullaby after Louise goes off to college. Right now the house is full (Matthew, Persephone, Elijah, Shelby, Steve, Louise, Oz, Josephine and Buttercup) and I don't see Matthew and Persephone going anywhere soon.

Hey look! It's Sunday Picspam on a Sunday. That's a first, isn't it?

With the holidays over, I finally had a weekend to myself. Friday gaming was canceled due to colds and flu-like symptoms. I still went out to dinner with some friends and played a bit of Wii at one of their houses. Beyond that, most of the weekend was spent either taking down and packing up Christmas decorations or simming.

This was the first time I'd actually had a chance to PLAY in the new neighborhood. I'd obviously done lots of work getting things set up and I'd staged several scenes in the new 'hood, but for the most part, I hadn't just played.

Oz was quite pleased to actually be played since this meant he got to learn all his toddler skills. Again.

Cut for obvious reasons and spoilerish stuff from 4.9 )
orikes: (miranda)
I really wanted 4.9 to be out before Christmas, but I suppose just after New Year isn't too bad, all things considered. Christmas was the two-year anniversary to the day I created Taylor and began playing the legacy neighborhood. January 6th will be the two-year anniversary of the first time I uploaded a story. Considering how nebulous it all is, I'll still count this update as my anniversary update. I'd have liked to do something more, but there are only so many hours in the day.

I keep thinking about how excited I'm going to be to get Gen Five into college and really start their story, but that's not going to be as resonant if I don't develop them through their growing up years. Even though I'm anxious to get to some of the juicier plot bits I want to get into, the next couple updates are necessary to move things along.

So, let's talk about some spoilerific stuff. Don't click if you haven't read the most recent update. )
orikes: (miranda)
Well, I'd feel odd calling it a Christmas Present, but I do have something to share.

(Click on the picture for the link.)

The majority of the pictures were taken over a month ago around Thanksgiving while I was in the middle of the rebuild. I needed a break, so figured I'd go for it. After that, though, I was more interested in the rebuild and getting what I needed for Pseudo 4.9. With Christmas, though, I'd occasionally find I had time to Sim, but not enough to work on anything major for the Legacians.

So, you get a new Dormie Guide. Yay!

There's more picspam inside... )
orikes: (wing)
No holiday themes here. Yet. I've been loving the holiday photoshoots that everyone has been doing, but I haven't quite found the time to put something together yet. It's been a crazy busy time of the year, but that's generally expected about now, isn't it?

For the first time in six years, my dad is going to get to spend Christmas Day/Eve with my brother and I. It's also the first time he'll be staying with me while he's up here, so I've been trying to make sure the apartment is as presentable as possible. I want to make this as nice as possible.

In sim type news, I've been plugging away at getting Chapter 4.9 together. There were a lot more pictures I needed to get than I originally realized. Partially because I didn't take the pictures I needed and partially because I decided I wanted to reshoot certain scenes. There's also been some little stuff to continue doing with the rebuild.

"Uh, who are you and why are you giving me presents?"

Like finishing up some of the portraits. )

Anyway, that's all for today. It's looking more and more likely I won't have an update ready to go by Christmas, but it should still be before the new year. I want to get out at least one more update before the end of the year. :)
orikes: (miranda)
I had intended to do picspam this weekend, but between the virus and my work's holiday party, it didn't even come close to happening. Lucky for you, that just means you get Sunday Picspam a couple of days late.

Here's New Terra Lostundo. One of the reasons why the rebuild has taken so long is that I spent quite a bit of time making sure the hood itself was going to be as useable as possible while still keeping things where they were. This meant I spent time smoothing the roads and terrains out and making sure I could fit in as many houses as I wanted to.

Over on the right hand side, you can see Legacina Main. Up on the hill above it is the Walton house, while closer to the lake is the Thompson house. I write that the Walton house is actually far away, but it's probably physically the closest populated home to the main house. Also on the right side of the screen is the 'business district' of the neighborhood. That's where all of Matthew's businesses are located, as well as a couple of others I built. Adrian and Adrian actually own a flower shop there.

Speaking of unpopulated houses, I've got placed in there some of my own houses, some houses I downloaded and some I built specifically on these lots. I've got a few empty lots placed down to reserve unique locations. When I want a distraction, I'll probably head into those lots and build something to make it look a little more populated.

You're probably bored with my rambling about the neighborhood, aren't you?

Well, I'm never going to let you down when it comes to regular picspam. )

I'm currently working on 4.9. I had wanted to have it out by Christmas, but with losing a whole day to the virus, I'm not sure if that is going to be feasible now. I'm still going to try, though. I've got a bunch of scenes I need to shoot to get what I didn't get the first time around or pad scenes that I need padded. There's also one plotty scene I need to shoot that may take a little time.

Anyway, that's where things stand for now. :)
orikes: (streaker)
The rebuilding is still in progress. It's definitely not going as fast as I would hope, but then I'm handling it in the way only I know how. On one hand, I'm fairly organized and methodical, but on the other, I'm impatient and impulsive, so I've had to backtrack a couple of times to fix things I should have tested before hand. That's okay, though. It's me and it's how I work.

I ran into an issue that I thought was a huge problem. Family relationships weren't quite coming out as smoothly as I'd hoped with InSim. The family tree was showing up properly, but cousins weren't recognizing cousins and a couple of siblings had disturbing boltage for one another (and it wasn't Aeric and Venus).

Regardless, things are still moving forward, so I have some picspam for you! )

Anyway, there you go. It's coming along. I should be able to have an update out sometime before Christmas, but we'll see. Things will start getting busier here on out. It was nice having this four-day weekend (Happy Belated Turkey Day to anyone who celebrates it), but now it's back to work. :)
orikes: (miranda)
I've had a chance to play the Fall rotation among some houses. I was debating on how to do this since a couple of chronological things caused me to second guess myself.

First, Star was the first Gen 5 kid born in the neighborhood. By the order I was playing houses, though, Jacob was going to grow up into teen first. This made me hesitate. In the end, I decided it'd be close enough for horseshoes and sims playing.

So, without further ado, allow me to present ... )
orikes: (celo)
Obviously, there are going to be spoilers in here if you haven't read both parts of Chapter 4.8. I've been working on this plotline for a very long time, so I'm probably going to ramble a bit now that I can finally talk about it.

It's funny. I've been working on this storyline for so long that when I asked for ideas on what people wanted to see next, I'd forgotten that no one else actually knew what was going to happen next. :}

First, though, let's talk about Ian. (60+ Pictures) )
orikes: (fairy)

Click on the link to be taken to the update. Oof. Finally done.

I'll probably do a Behind-The-Scenes tomorrow night or Monday. Tomorrow afternoon I have a two-year-old's birthday to go to. The rest of tonight is intended to recuperate. ;)
orikes: (miranda)
The first half of Chapter Four, Part Eight is up.

http://thesims2.ea.com/exchange/story_detail.php?asset_id=246333

It was actually up hours ago, but I didn't have time to post a note here. Then there were Piratical updates and other distractions.

I hope to have the second half done for Saturday night. After that, I'll do some outtakes. Then I can get playing. Yay!
