Finally, something that doesn't involve the Sims!

I've been pondering getting a new bed for quite a while. The one I have is in pretty poor shape and it was a hand-me-down when I got it. It gets the job done and I don't have constant back pain or anything, but I know from sleeping in good beds that I'm missing out on a really good night's sleep.

Last summer when I went to GenCon, we stayed at the Westin which had amazing beds. Also this summer, I dog sat for some friends who have one of those super forming foam beds. That was also pretty damn cool. I can't afford either of those options, but I would like to get closer.

The problem is, I've never shopped for a mattress and box spring and I'm a little leery of dropping that much money on one purchase like that. I went to a local mattress store (Metro Mattress) and they have a Simmons BeautyRest 'Montano' pillowtop on sale that looks like it's a good deal. It was also quite comfy. They say it's normally about $1150 but it's on sale for $800. The sale is 'while supplies last', which irks me a bit.

Are any of you fine folks out there reading this experts on buying mattresses? :)

We just bought a foam mattress from Costco (http://www.costco.com/Common/Search.aspx?whse=BC&topnav=&search=foam%20mattress&N=0&Ntt=foam%20mattress&cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-US). Granted it's a king size, but it was the price of the one you're saying is on sale. We don't have a box spring for it either, just a bed frame from Ikea. We'd had a hand-me-down before as well, and although it was a good mattress (it wasn't very old when it was passed on), but I can't tell you how much better I'm sleeping now. It was amazing. Like night and day. It took a night or so to get used to it, but I'm so glad we made the investment. One nice thing about Costco, is their return policy. If you get it and hate it, you can always take it back. Now, getting a foam mattress back to the store after it's inflated might be a little tricky, but you can still do it if you need to. I figured lots of duct tape, garden bags, and big guy manhandling. Good luck!

Unfortunately, we don't have a Costco around here. We've got BJs and Sams Club and I know BJs doesn't have mattresses like that. I originally looked there. Cest la vie. :)

One of my brothers purchased a pillow top mattress about two years ago. He was really happy with it in the beginning but said that it developed a dent/trough/trench fairly early on. I have no idea what sort of price point he'd been playing with though, nor do I know if that's a common problem with pillow tops. I've heard rave reviews from other people.

I just bought new mirarest mattresses this fall since I was also sleeping on a bed that was a hand-me-down from my grandparents and it had sat in their basement for guests to use for probably as long as I've been alive. Both of them are pillow tops and I think they are really comfortable. The trick with the pillow tops is that you do have to rotate them frequently (mine said every two weeks) or they will get a dent in them fairly quickly (I'm too lazy to rotate them even every month). Of course I didn't notice it had a dent in it until I rotated it and slept on the other side.

I just bought a mattress this summer ( a Serta Perfect Day) and spent a lot more than that, to be honest. It's got a eurotop (a bit less thick than a pillow top) and memory foam, and it does develop a dent once in a while (couldn't be because I was lying in a trough playing Sims for hours, could it?)

Mine is a no-rotate mattress, and it's too heavy to rotate, anyway, so I just sleep on the other side once in a while and that seems to do the trick. You'll love having a new mattress, though. I'd been sleeping on the same one since 1989.

Oh, yes, advice. Sorry.

Make sure you lie on the mattresses for a good while. Don't hesitate to go home, and um, sleep on it. It's a big purchase. I got the price bumped down a bit because I saw a similar mattress advertised at Sears and went back to the Serta outlet a couple of times. They wanted to make a sale. They always want to make a sale, so don't hesitate to ask what they are willing to do. Good idea to write all the particulars down or cut ads out of the paper, so when you go from one place to another you can show them the other mattresses you are looking at.

Be sure to ask about other costs, like tax (big in So Cal), delivery, disposal, etc., unless you have very nice friends with a big truck and very good backs. The days when I had tons of friends who would move heavy furniture for free pizza and beer are over, and mattresses are reaaaaallly heavy.
