Buying A New Bed

I've been pondering getting a new bed for quite a while. The one I have is in pretty poor shape and it was a hand-me-down when I got it. It gets the job done and I don't have constant back pain or anything, but I know from sleeping in good beds that I'm missing out on a really good night's sleep.
Last summer when I went to GenCon, we stayed at the Westin which had amazing beds. Also this summer, I dog sat for some friends who have one of those super forming foam beds. That was also pretty damn cool. I can't afford either of those options, but I would like to get closer.
The problem is, I've never shopped for a mattress and box spring and I'm a little leery of dropping that much money on one purchase like that. I went to a local mattress store (Metro Mattress) and they have a Simmons BeautyRest 'Montano' pillowtop on sale that looks like it's a good deal. It was also quite comfy. They say it's normally about $1150 but it's on sale for $800. The sale is 'while supplies last', which irks me a bit.
Are any of you fine folks out there reading this experts on buying mattresses? :)

Date: 2008-02-24 06:16 am (UTC)Mine is a no-rotate mattress, and it's too heavy to rotate, anyway, so I just sleep on the other side once in a while and that seems to do the trick. You'll love having a new mattress, though. I'd been sleeping on the same one since 1989.

Date: 2008-02-24 06:22 am (UTC)Make sure you lie on the mattresses for a good while. Don't hesitate to go home, and um, sleep on it. It's a big purchase. I got the price bumped down a bit because I saw a similar mattress advertised at Sears and went back to the Serta outlet a couple of times. They wanted to make a sale. They always want to make a sale, so don't hesitate to ask what they are willing to do. Good idea to write all the particulars down or cut ads out of the paper, so when you go from one place to another you can show them the other mattresses you are looking at.
Be sure to ask about other costs, like tax (big in So Cal), delivery, disposal, etc., unless you have very nice friends with a big truck and very good backs. The days when I had tons of friends who would move heavy furniture for free pizza and beer are over, and mattresses are reaaaaallly heavy.
