Okay you comic minded people on my friends list. I got a gift card to Barnes & Noble from my brother for Christmas. I already have a ton of books sitting on my 'to be read' shelf, so I decided to spend this giftcard on graphic novels.

I'm woefully out of touch with what's worth getting, though. I've thought about Hellboy and Transmetropolitan, but I'm not sure what else. (I put League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Fables on a wish list for my friends who I celebrate Christmas with next week, so I don't want to get any of them.)

So, any recommendations? You are all much wiser than I. :) The gift card is, of course, burning a hole in my pocket.

You absolutely can not go wrong with either Hellboy or Transmet. Both of these were downright instant classics. Transmetropolitan may well be my favorite series all time. I place it on the same pedestal as the Sandman and Preacher if that gives you an idea of my take. Also Mignola is a genius, and Hellboy is his defining work. If you haven't read them any of the Garth Ennis penned Hellblazer TPBS are fantastic. There is also in sort of the same vein Finder, Y the Last Man, 100 Bullets (these last three I need to catch up on as I'm a few steps behind the curve).

Any other genres you are interested in?

I'm pretty open to anything. It's been years since I followed comics on a regular basis, so I'm out of touch with quite a bit. Almost a year ago, a friend shoved all his Sandman graphic novels in my hands, which cemented my love of Neil Gaiman, but other than that.. I'm pretty much willing to take a look at almost anything. :)

You could dig up an illustrated copy of Stardust. Back when it was first published I had a really hard time getting my hands on one, since I didn't know about it until it was pretty much off the shelves. But with the movie I'm sure it has been re-printed. The illustrations are totally worth it.

For the gentler story-driven of comics, the Flight anthologies and, oo, pretty much anyone involved in them. (I particularly liked Daisy Cutter.) Bone. Castle Waiting. But you know me; I avoid superhero comics for those with a stronger story element but with a strong speculative fiction element.

I'm no good with graphic novels (unless you're talking manga) but I hope you find some good ones! I love gift cards. ^_^

Preacher. Preacher Preacher Preacher Preacher Preacher. Preacher.

It's... 7? 8? I forget now. 7 or 8 books total, though. So you might want to consider something shorter, I guess. But I'm fairly certain it will appeal to someone who has the same webcomics taste as I have. :)

Well Hellboy is rather awesome (*cheers*), but I'm all about the worship for a couple of other novels:
-Sin City. They all rock; although they're all a bit gorey they're very stylised so it's not bad at all.
-The Gunslinger Born. It's a graphic novelisation of part of a Stephen King saga which I VERY highly recommend (The Dark Tower). It's gorgeous!
