'Wicked' was AWESOME.

All in all, it was a good day. Out to the gaming store where I hung out with friends and poked a bit at 4th edition D&D with an encounter. (I picked up my copies of the books on Friday.) It's different. I'm looking forward to getting to know the system and I do expect I'll enjoy it. Most of my friends I play with are excited about it too.

Honestly, from my perspective, I'm glad for the change. While I still enjoyed 3.5, I was getting bored. By the time 2nd edition became obsolute, I despised it. I still despise it. Next week we're getting together on Friday and making characters up for a new game. We'll see how it goes.

After that, it was time to head to dinner to meet folks before 'Wicked'. Most of the people we had dinner with, I only know very casually. They're friends of my friend. They're nice folks, and we had some fun conversations.

(All the guys are gay and Anne is a good friend to all of them. She was joking that any guy she hooks up with is going to have to be put through boot camp by all her gay friends. One of the guys joked that they could turn it into a reality show and one of the other guys gave it a title: "So You Want To Date My Fag Hag". Horribly inappropriate, but horribly funny.)

Then it was off to the show. My aisle seat turned out to be anything but. Ah well. It was still an amazing show. The majority of the parts were performed by the understudies, but you wouldn't have been able to tell that from the way they performed. Man oh man.

On a geekier, sim related note, I kept getting lots and lots of ideas during the show. I think I may just have to do a flashback for Kirstial's background now.

I thought she was amazing. 'Defying Gravity' was pretty damn good, and every time she had a song, it just felt perfect. I couldn't tell you much about the music one way or another, but when compared to the original cast recording, I thought she came pretty darn close to Idina Menzel. The girl playing Glinda had a couple of screechy moments, I thought, but the more musically inclined folks I was with thought she was fine. They were also thought our Fiyero was lacking enthusiasm on 'Dancing Through Life', but again, I thought he was fine.

What's interesting is now that I look at the program book, the girl who played Elphaba wasn't even listed as an understudy. She was like the understudy's understudy or something, I guess. I thought she was pretty damn amazing.

Megan Hilty played Glinda when I saw it. Ew, no faaanks. She couldn't sing, all she could do was screech and shout. The Fiyero I saw was really good, except he got off the beat during the beginning of "Dancing Through Life" which was definitely not all that great.

Could she have been the standby? *shrug* Sometimes the best people are understudies/standbys. My absolute favorite person to play Mimi in RENT was Saycon Sengloh, and she was a standby.

Actually, I looked at the program again, and the woman who performed Elphaba was listead as a 'Standby'.

So, what's the difference between a standby and an understudy?

Ultimately, the show was fantastic and I wish I could go again (and be closer to the stage), so it doesn't really matter, but I was curious.

They're like... understudies to the understudies, I guess? They fill in when there's an emergency or something and both the understudy and the usual actor can't perform that night.
