Let's Talk About Heroes
Nov. 29th, 2006 03:02 amMan, I love this show more and more each week. I didn't think it was possible, but it really does seem to get better each time it airs. There hasn't been an episode I haven't been in love with, except possibly the first one, and there were extenuating circumstances behind that (like the network deciding to air the original two hour pilot as two separate episodes).
I've heard numerous people comparing the show to Lost. It does have many qualities that bring it in comparison to Lost (the large cast, serial nature, mysteries unfolding), but I'm not quite ready to declare one show greater than the other. I still enjoy Lost and haven't been as disappointed with it as some people have this season. Honestly, I'm happy to have two serials on the air that are popular and not in danger of being canceled any time soon.
Now for the spoilerific discussions of this week's episode:
Man this episode was awesome. As much as I like Hiro, I was afraid at first that the whole thing was going to focus on him and Charlie. I don't think I could take a whole episode of that much cute. The fact that it went six months in the past for EVERYONE (or nearly) made me absolutely delighted.
The Nikki part of the story was rather enlightening. Now we know why she's fractured into two people. I would put money on the fact that Jessica has been there since the original died and, in a way, is protecting her from her powers as well as the other bad stuff she's protected Nikki from. We also now know why she's named Jessica. I didn't realize she was an alcoholic, though, so it makes me wonder if there's been other signs in the show. Micah taking apart the laptop was awesome too. We know his abilities were already in play then as well.
I almost can't blame Nathan for being as uptight as he's been in some of the episodes. Almost simultaneously, he manifested the powers he doesn't want, had his wife crippled because of something he was involved in, and had his father commit suicide. He still needs a smack upside the head, but as with many of the seemingly unsympathetic characters on the show, there are reasons why he is the way he is.
It was nice getting to see some of Eden's background. This bit of exposition on her fed in nicely to the comic from last week. I wonder if Parkman was almost resisting her donut command there, since his powers were on the cusp. Her part of the story also made me wonder exactly what Mr. Bennett is involved in, since her whole reason for being near Chandra Suresh was extremely self-motivated on his part. Of course, he did mention last week (I think) that Claire's birth mother had powers and had been 'secured'. He is also a fascinating character. At first he seemed like just a one-dimensional version of the Smoking Man, but he's really rather interesting and sympathetic in an odd way.
And then, of course, there is the introduction of Syler. We've seen him before, but now we actually got to see and understand who he is. To a certain degree, he just screamed psychopath to me when Chandra was talking to him about certain things, so it doesn't surprise me how easy it was for him to become a serial killer. And poor David. I don't care if he was called Brian in this episode. He's still David, the junior coroner from CSI.
This episode also had some wonderful visuals in it. From the thousand origami cranes hanging from the ceiling in the diner, to the eclipse like shadow behind Nathan as he learned Heidi was going to be crippled, it had me continuously going "oooooh". That's the type of stuff I love to see mingled in with my addicting stories.
Finally, I very much like the way they ended the episode, pretty much bringing us back to the points from the end of the previous episode, so we can not lose too much ground with the next episode. They definitely have me on the edge of my seat, AND very grateful the episodes are provided online for free.
