This is the third job I've started where I have fallen within the first couple of weeks of being employed.

When I started at Leicthner's in 2004, there was major construction being done on the intersection where I had to change busses. Because of the construction (which is still going on today) the bus couldn't let me off at a curb/sidewalk, instead had to let passengers off onto the street itself. Getting off the bus one night, I seriously misjudged the distance between the bottom step and the pavement, since it actually sloped rather dramatically. Boom, down I went. No major damage, but quite a bit of embarrassment. That driver treated me with kid gloves after that and insisted I wait until she lower the bus for me. I felt like an old lady.

In 2005, when I started at Kodak, I made the mistake of wearing sneakers on a day when the sidwalks were still icy. It was March and it was supposed to warm up. I was being stubborn since I wanted Spring, dammit. Either way, when I was headed to catch the bus, I hit an icy patch and went down in a heap. I went one way, my knee went the other. That was one of the more painful experiences I've had, and I have had major surgery before. If I hadn't been in training for the job, I probably would have taken a couple of days off to recouperate. It was a good three weeks before I was able to walk without a pained hobble.

This brings us to yesterday morning. Second week at the new job, and I've been taking the bus in each day. It drops me off nearly in front of the building. I stepped off the bus and too late realized my right foot was actually in a divot where the grass made it look like it was level ground. My ankle twisted and I went down hard. The bus driver must have thought I broke something, because he was panicking and wanting to know if he should call someone. Embarrassed as hell, I picked myself up (after swearing rather loudly and violently) and told him I was okay. I hobbled into work muttering the whole way.

My ankle was sore but not too bad. I had a bit of a limp for most of the day, but it was bearable. I figured that was the worst of it, but was wrong. Once I was home, I found that there were some pretty ugly bruises on my right breast and my side hurt. I think I must have bruised a rib or something. It's not too severe since Tylenol helps the pain go away, but still. Owch.

(As a side note, my poor right breast has been through so much. It's the one I punctured with a pencil tip in highschool. I still I have the little black dot to show for it. It's also the one that's permanently dented from the seatbelt bruising after two car accidents.)

I really hope I keep this job for a while so I don't have to experience the pain of another fall. It really makes me wish I had an ounce of grace in my body.
