And The Fish Came Back
Oct. 1st, 2006 11:29 pmSometime this summer, I can't remember exactly when, I got off my lazy arse and fixed my fishtank situation. The one remaining fish I had, an emotionally scarred Harlequin Barb, was living in a tank that was so filled with algae and gunk, you couldn't see inside. Despite my laziness, I actually like having fish, so when I had a little extra money this summer (when I was still employed, dammit), I borrowed the roomie's car and hit the petstore for everything I'd need to get the larger tank set back up.
I got new filter media, a new lid, flourescent light, river stones for the bottom, a new decoration more in theme with my Piratey inclinations. One afternoon later, it was all set up, sparkly with its cleanliness and with one emotionally scarred tropical fish hiding in the decoration, wondering what the hell all this 'light' stuff was.
It sat for a good week, just to make sure it wasn't going to suddenly implode, or if the one fish was going to decide that now was his time to die. Since all seemed to be going well, I went back to the petstore to get more fish. My original tank went down hill after the plecostomas got too big and died. So, I got a small one (Raina calls it my 'allergy eater'). I also got two little catfish thingies to be bottom feeders. Then, the pretty fish. I like barbs, so I picked out three albino gold barbs to get started.
This, of course, traumatized the original fish even more. Not only was I forcing him to have light, I was now forcing him to be social. He spends most of his time hiding in the decoration.
Either way, everything seemed to be going just fine in the tank until one day about a month and a half ago, I realized one of the new barbs was missing. The riverstones provide many hiding places, so I spent a good amount of time scanning the tank to see if I had missed him or if he was dead on the bottom. There was absolutely no sign of him in the tank. Since the one missing was the most vibrantly colored one, it was clear that he was gone. It's not unheard of for a fish to jump out of a tank and never be found again. There was no body, but at this time, he was missing, presumed dead.
Until this weekend, that is.
I got up and went over to the tank to give them some food when I suddenly realized I could see three barbs happily swimming around, waiting for me to feed them. Not two, like there had been for the last month and a half, but THREE. The missing fish was back.
I have no idea where he went, and I'm quite put out that he didn't at least send a postcard. I hope he had a good time, though.
