BE HONEST!!
Jun. 16th, 2004 12:25 amThe job still sucks ass, but I have learned one thing folks. Be honest! If a telemarketer calls you, especially one who is working on a fund raiser, be up front with them. Do not, under any circumstances, tell them you're too busy to take the call unless you want them to call you back. If you do not tell them flat out that you are not interested in buying/giving/whatever, they will have to put you back in the system to get called again another time.
It's so incredibly frustrating. The campaign I'm currently working on is winding down, so I'm seeing some records that I have already called. So often, people try and be evasive by saying, "Bob's not here." or "I'm busy right now." That's all fine and dandy, but it means I'm going to be irritating you again with another call tomorrow. While it's painful to deal with rejections, I'd much rather get someone who's up front with me than someone who's pussyfooting around and gets irritated that we're still calling.
Speaking of which, I really don't handle rejection well. I knew this, but never quite to this degree. I seriously get depressed every night when I'm getting refusal after refusal. I can still pull it together enough to sound professional on each call, but still. I don't like forcing people into a position where they have to say no to me.
(This is probably similar to how I handle romantic relationships and why I have had so few of them)
Anyway... be up front with the telemarketer person. You're only setting yourself up for more irritation.
