Hotel arrangements have been finalized for Gencon. Doug started cruising the GenCon boards and found a 'Roommate Wanted' section. We ended up hooking up with a guy from Iowa who had reserved a one-bedroom suite about two blocks from the Convention Center and wanted some roommates to defray the cost. So far he’s got us two and someone else, and we might be letting a couple of people sleep on the floor to bring down the cost even more. With just four of us, it’ll end up being a little over $200 for four nights for each of us. Not bad.

I know some friends will think I’m crazy for staying with strangers, but… ehn. I may be reckless, but I’m not necessarily stupid. Doug will be there and I’ve done this type of thing before. Hell, I flew out to Las Vegas by myself to share a room with two guys that I only knew from EverQuest. I survived that. This time I’ll have a friend with me, so I won’t be completely alone. And rest assured, I did check the guy’s references. He’s a con regular for a lot of the big cons and has run stuff for Cheapass Games. Maybe I should be a little worried about someone who delights in killing Dr. Lucky, but it’s all in good fun.

Of course, the hotel thing worked out and now the ride thing is looking trickier. I found out the guy we were going to ride up with didn’t want to leave until Wednesday night. He’d planned on driving all night and arriving in Indy around the time the con starts. Uh… that’s so not going to work for me. Especially since our hotel costs include Wednesday night. If we did that, we’d be throwing money out the window and almost lose the advantage of carpooling. I’ve talked to Kevin, the guy who was going to be driving, and I think he’s looking into switching the drive to Wednesday during the day, but just in case, I’m not canceling the car rental just yet.

I’ve got so much I’ve got to do between now and next Wednesday. Some of it is going to require drafting someone to play chauffer, or talking the roommate into letting me use her car. I need to get my hair cut (it needs it), get to the cell phone place, get my bottles returned, get my change turned into cash, make sure I have food and litter for all my furry family members, get some of the last minute stuff I know I need, and probably visit my mom if I can swing it. I’m thinking I’m going to talk the roommate into letting me drive her to work on Friday, use her car for the running around, then drop it off at her work and be picked up there by the [livejournal.com profile] skotte for gaming that night.

I can hear this one friend in the back of my head, though, lecturing me about the fact that if I wasn’t going to GenCon, I could have the parking tickets paid off and be getting my car on the road. She’d be right to a certain degree, and that thought has made me feel a little guilty about the trip. I ended up talking to my dad about it and he’s of the opinion that you have to take some time for yourself to enjoy life once in a while. "So you get the car stuff taken care of a couple of months later than you would otherwise. You're always going to have some financial obligation that seems like it needs to be taken care of right this instant. Sometimes you need to put those things on pause and do something fun." I love my dad.

Gotta agree with your dad. Glad you're gonna go have fun! And I hope you do have a ton of fun.
