I have two new obsessions.

The first, I’ve already mentioned. Lost. This show has quite thoroughly grabbed me by the collar and sucked me in. I like the darker edges that run through some of the characters, or the irony or mystery in their backstories. I also want to know WTF is going on at that island. (Oh yeah, and it was cool that the actress who played Delenn from B5 has a secondary role.)

I have discovered, though, that I am cursed. I’m getting the series DVDs through Netflix. While I’ve had a few bad disks that I’ve had to report, for the most part Netflix is pretty reliable. I have received four disks of Lost, totally 12 episodes. I have experienced problems on two disks and only in two episodes. BOTH episodes were Sawyer episodes.

For the uninitiated, Lost’s formula has the main storyline of the island continuing apace in good serial style, but there is always a secondary storyline that is told through flashbacks, giving insight into a character’s background. That what makes an episode belong to a particular character. Sawyer is the conflicted bad boy con artist who often walks around without a shirt on … mmm.

My second obsession is Sims 2.

When the new computer was a reality, I decided to pick up the game since I’d been curious about it, but I knew it wouldn’t run on my system. I had liked the original version, but found it got old fast. I enjoyed building houses, but the people themselves seemed pretty limited.

I can say in my expert opinion that Sims 2 kicks the original game’s ass.

The biggest difference is that Sims age now. In the original game they were either frozen at child or adult. They couldn’t die unless they were stupid or you were particularly vindictive. After a while, there was little to do with them that was interesting.

In Sims2, though, they actually age through several ages (baby, toddler, child, teen, adult, and elder) and can actually die of old age. There’s also a touch of genetics in there since you can have two Sims have a child that is actually designed based on their looks and personality. Somehow it adds a level of complexity to the game that has got me completely hooked.

There are three pre-built neighborhoods that come with the game, but you can create your own. After playing the pre-built ones for a bit, I started my own. Since I was already addicted to Lost, I named my island community Isla Lostundo. Say it! It’s fun to say. Get your most outrageous Ricardo Montalban accent on and say. Isla Lostundo!

(As a side note, all of the family names in Isla Lostundo are based on names from Lost. The Sawyer family, the Jackson family, the Michaels family, the Hurle family, the Shannons, and so on.)

Currently in Isla Lostundo, I’ve had several children age to teenhood, several babies born that are now children, a couple of teens age to adult hood, and one elder die of old age. The elder was the shocker for me. Elsa Hurle was the sweet, family oriented matriarch of a brood of three boys she’d had with Wheaton Hurle, a money-hungry grouch. She was the happiest Sim I had. She was in love with her husband (the two were always flirting with each other) and ended up glowing every time a grandchild was added to the family. Yet she inexplicably died first. I always figured sour Wheaton would go first.

Anyway. I’m sure I’ve bored you enough. :)
