I actually signed up for Netflix, not because of the movies, but for the television series DVDs. I really can't justify the expense for cable tv, since I rarely watch it. While I've got nothing against good television, I hate being tied to the same bat channel, same bat time to get my fix. About two years ago, I discovered the joy of season DVDs.

Babylon 5 got me started. I was able to borrow seasons one through four from various friends, but no one had season five. For good reason according to some fans, but for completeness sake, I wanted to rewatch it. I found out that Netflix had it available, so I signed up and finished watching the series.

After that came Farscape, which I had always wanted to watch, but never had the time or the cable access. It was well, well worth the time spent viewing. The series is going down as one of my favorites. My only regret right now is that I can't find a poster for my computer room, dammit. Amidst Farscape came CSI. I ripped through four seasons of that show and could definitely rip through five more. I'm a bit of an addict.

Now comes Lost. I heard about it. I read about it. I thought it sounded cool, but I didn't feel like trying to catch it on TV. So, it went on the Netflix list. Today, I finished watching the first disk of the first season. The two-hour pilot and then Tabula Rasa and Walkabout. I'm hooked.

I keep getting the feeling that this is what television would be if M. Night Shyalman were writing it. Gimme more. Right now. Dammit.

If you haven't already, watch Stargate SG-1. And then Stargate: Atlantis. I'm less of a fan of Battlestar Galactica but some people love it. It's good but the Stargate series are the best thing on TV.

SG-1 is on my list after Lost. :)

Basically I have a cycle of three types of things going at once: Movie, SF Series, Mundane Series. After I'm done with the first season of Lost, SG-1 is queued up to go next.

And P.S... I'll try and log into CbtB tonight. I've been hooked playing with the new computer and all the games I couldn't get to run before. :)

Hee hee hee. :) I'm also a "Lost" addict. Got through the first season, but now I have to wait; the 2nd season may be out but I need to check for it. I keep hoping that, between all my TV-show addictions, they'll work in a nice cycle where the new season of one comes out just as I've finished the latest season of the old. Unfortunately, it hasn't worked quite like that yet. But I'm crossing my fingers.

Check out Battlestar Galactica & Firefly. If you're not already hooked on either, you likely will be soon. ;)

For some inexplicable reason I've been reluctant to get into Battlestar Galactica. There's no logical reason behind it. Everything I've heard has been good and it sounds interesting. I think it's because I've got a friend who's REALLY into it and will talk about it incessantly if I actually start watching it.

Firefly is on the list too.

Since Lost is in second season now, I don't think the season DVD will be out until maybe August or September. BUT... the network is going to start offering the show online the day after it airs. Basically you'll be able to watch it as a download after it airs. Not sure how much that'll cost, but for the addicted, that may be a good way to go.

Hmm. I can see why you'd be reluctant. I've avoided many a show/fad/book/movie for the very same reason. Some folks ought to realize that their extreme enthusiasm can be an extreme turnoff. ;)

As for Battlestar, though, I mainly liked the pilot-miniseries -- which on DVD is basically a 3-hour movie. Once it got into the series, I wasn't as intrigued, and that was largely because I only really liked a couple of the characters (Edward James Olmos' and Mary McDonnell's). For me, that's always key in a show -- if I don't like the characters, I won't keep watching.

I'm surprised you're not a Firefly fan yet, but now I can't remember if you were one of the "Joss Whedon is a god" types, or if you couldn't stand him. (MU*ers tended to fall in either one of two camps, from my experience). Still, I've had friends who don't care for Whedon much and still enjoyed that particular series. But, I won't push too hard. Don't want it to become a turnoff. ;)

I'm one of the rare Joss Whedon Neutral people. I've actually never (yes, NEVER) seen an episode of Buffy. I've heard good things about it, but never got into it when it was on tv. It's another one meant to go into the DVD queue when I get a chance for it.

I actually have friends I could borrow the season DVDs from, but right now I get stuff at a decent pace from Netflix, without overwhelming myself with boob tube marathons. :)

After that came Farscape

You recall the bit near the end (last season? Second to last?) where things are going from bad to worse and Scorpius is slowly walking down those stairs with water cascading down around his ankles?

That scene (and the things before and after) made me stand up and give the TV a standing ovation.

I think that scene was the end of the third season. Grayza had shown up to take over from Scorpius, and Moya's crew had done their best to get the ship to blow up.

The show just blew my mind in so many ways. I loved the entire cast, both sides of the nebulously good and bad coin.

IMO you should bump Firefly up over BSG and Stargate.

It's better (I could rant MUCH better, but each series actually has its own points that are better than the others--and if you liked Bab5 and Farscape, this will be right up your alley). But more importantly, it's SHORTER. It's not even a full season, even tacking the Serenity movie on the end as if it were a 'two part' episode.

So you'll have more to talk about faster, and then be able to move on to the bigger chunks of time that will comprise BSG and Stargate ;)

Your logic is impeccable. :)

And it is a good point, since it'll take me a while to get through the 7 seasons of SG:1 that are available.
