Gaming Conventions - The Big Boys
Feb. 7th, 2006 01:57 pmOkay, so Gaming Conventions.
I like attending them, but I’ve only ever been to some little, local ones. I would very much like to attend a larger con to get the experience, but they’re pretty expensive and I’m a bit intimidated. If I go, I’m going to need to pick one and stick with it. The choice right now is between Origins (June 29-July 2) or GenCon (August 10-13).
GenCon is the papa of them all. I’ve never been and it is a gaming mecca. I should make a pilgrimage at least once in my lifetime. Origins isn’t anything to scoff at, though, and is technically closer. Gencon is in Indianapolis (9 hour drive) and Origins is in Columbus (5.5 hour drive).
The big problem, though, is actually the money part. Registration is doable, and I’ll figure out transportation, but hotel... that’s going to be the bitch. Hotel rooms for both range between $85 to $150 per night. I can’t afford that for three nights on my own. I’d have to find roommates, but I don’t know enough people who will actually go.
Not to mention, I’m a little confused at how they work. It looks like at GenCon you have to buy tickets for different events in addition to the actual registration price, but I can’t find anything that says how much they cost. I suppose that’s a little quibble, but either way.
What I’m looking for is advice from anyone who’s attended them. Tell me what you know and I might let you live. Er. Well. You know what I mean.
