Disappointed
Nov. 8th, 2005 06:39 pmUny-con has been cancelled.
I am incredibly bummed out about this fact.
For more years than I like to acknowledge, the only roleplaying I did was what I could find online (and Everquest does not count), and my experience with D&D 3.0 was the aspects that showed up in games like Icewind Dale or Neverwinter Nights. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to. I desperately missed it and I desperately wanted to game. It was that I was too shy about going out and finding it when my old gaming friends stopped putting stuff together.
It’s only in this last year that I’ve actually had the courage to run a game and that was only with one gaming friend essentially pushing me off the edge and into the pool against my will. Before that, I was always a player and I was always dependant upon other people to start games. I didn’t feel it was my place to push for a game if they didn’t want to run one. As a result, I didn’t play in a face to face, tabletop, RPG game between 1994 and 2002.
In Everquest, I found a great group of guys that I was guilded with. In late 2002, they started an online DnD game through OpenRPG. It wasn’t quite the same as face to face, but it was the best I’d had in years and damn if it wasn’t wonderful. It also made me realize what I was missing. After that, I started seeing what I could do to scare up some gaming on a regular basis.
In Fall of 2003, I met a scary redneck man named Will. He proclaimed himself to be a great GM and was looking for more people for his game. He was a bit unnerving, but I was desperate for a game, so I agreed to go.
He was, unequivocally, the worst GM I have ever played with.
No, I am serious. He really was that bad. And it tells you how desperate I was that I went back for a total of about three or four sessions.
This guy’s game was horribly painful and everything bad you can think of about your early DnD experiences. He was like a twelve-year-old perverted geek stuck in the body of a thirty year old. He actually thought his game was good. One of the things that actually made it worth staying, though, was some of his players seemed pretty cool. The first session I got to meet Scott and Woody, and then a later session TJ showed up. These are folks from the group I currently game with. We basically defected.
Before that could happen, though, I found out there was going to be a non-school affiliated gaming convention in Rochester that Fall. Exactly two years ago this coming weekend. I hated going to these things alone, but I was desperate. I wanted to game and I knew I wouldn’t be able to take too much more of Will’s game. I was hoping that I could find a local group needing players. So, I signed up and went by myself.
I had an absolutely wonderful time. There was this guy from Binghamton who was a history professor and ran a couple of the most amazing super hero games I’ve ever played. He was absolutely brilliant and made the game come alive. There was a couple of other games too, all of which were better than Will’s. I didn’t actually find anyone to game with locally, but it did show me that I was a good gamer and deserved better than Will offered.
I attended one more session of Will’s game and left it at that. After the holidays, I ended up getting in contact with TJ, Scott and Woody. That Spring we started a game of our own with their respective spouses. The rest is history as far as that goes.
Either way, Uny-con came up again in November of 2004. Again, I decided I was going come hell or high water. This time I got to spend a bit more time there with Dr. Angela (one of the later additions to the gaming group) and Scott and Heidianna. It was a great deal of fun and I got to partake in that amazing GM’s games again. His games absolutely kick ass.
I could see that there were some problems with the con. They had some issues with their dealer room, and I’d heard some mumbles from various people, but I was figuring they could turn it around. The con was announced this summer for the first weekend in December. A little late, but what the hell. It would be a nice break from Christmas shopping. This year I was also going to reserve a room at the hotel so a bunch of us could crash there and make it a more ‘complete’ experience. I kept checking the site to see when pre-reg would open up, but it never did.
Just this weekend, I went to check in pre-reg and found out the con’s been cancelled. No reasons why, just ‘unforeseen circumstances.’ Well poop. Now there’s going to be no con experience this year, no kick ass GM, no awesome social experience where I can still be a little shy but get some fun in. I wish I knew a little more dirt on what happened. What got bungled to cause the con to get cancelled.
I’ve started looking at other conventions to go to. There’s Geneseo’s ‘Running GAGG’ in early February, but that’s difficult without a car. Simcon happens at UofR in March and I might be able to swing that one. I’m also considering some out-of-town cons. Connecticon had caught my eye before and I know they had some drama with money this year, so it would be interesting to see how they deal with that this coming year. There’s also always GenCon if I truly want to make a pilgrimage.
Ah well. We’ll see.

Date: 2005-11-09 12:31 am (UTC)You can probably, you know, twist my arm, or something :) to go to a con somewhere with you, eh. like geneseo or wherever. you know. if you needed a ride. I'd need more info of course.

Date: 2005-11-09 03:03 pm (UTC)We should see how many folks from CCM and such we can get to go! Wouldn't it be cool? I don't even care about any of the GenCon events -- though the dealer room is awesome, I'd just want to game face to face with folks. :)
Excuse my extreme hubris, but I consider myself to be a fairly decent GM. I'd love to maybe do a round robin thing with people switching off for the same group of PCs or something. :)

Date: 2005-11-10 04:35 am (UTC)I'd want to try for a couple of games there, though, just because I'm there... I -have- to. And besides, I think the awesome GM goes there and runs occasionally. I think.
