Only Good At Being Young
Feb. 13th, 2009 02:25 pmSo. Birthday.
The fortieth birthday.
Today.
Theoretically, I'm supposed to be securely entrenched in middle age now. I should be old. But oddly, there was no magic switch, no sudden change in my disposition. I'm still me. I still feel like I did yesterday when I was 39. Which is, honestly, only slightly different how I felt when I was 29. Maybe a bit different from when I was 19, but that was a long time ago.
The number is kind of mind boggling, but beyond that, I'm okay with this birthday. I think turning 29 was actually the hardest birthday I've dealt with. This is nothing. I'm still me. The number's a little different and I have to answer surveys by checking a different age bracket, but for the most part, it's alright.
This afternoon, I'm headed out for a long weekend. There's a little local convention down in a nearby college town. I'm headed out with a couple of friends and we'll be sharing the hotel room with some guys from Binghamton. It's probably going to be a bit of a crowd in the hotel room, but it should make it cheaper for everyone involved. Cheap is good. Hopefully the two guys who snore like buzzsaws don't keep everyone awake. It should be a good time.
In other news, I've recently been turned on to some new music and wanted to share a couple of them with you guys.
Badly Drawn Boy is not actually a group, but a pseudonym for one guy. It seems very British and reminds me a bit of some of Euro stuff from the 80's, but I'm not quite sure why. Here's another song I really like from his "Born in the U.K." album.
The other artist I've been listening to non stop for the last week is Ingrid Michaelson. She's got a gorgeous voice. I've mostly been listening to the "Be OK" album, but her earlier one is pretty good to. Here is another song I like, and especially this one.
Last month I was all over Fall Out Boy, so it's kind of interesting to switch to two more mellow artists.
Anyway, I need to get moving. So thank you to everyone for the birthday wishes. :) Have a good weekend!

Date: 2009-02-13 08:06 pm (UTC)I agree about aging. I hardly ever feel any different. Lessons are learned, and goals are met (and some not), but as a person, I feel the same. You just become more like yourself.

Date: 2009-02-13 08:22 pm (UTC)I'll be joining you in the forties later this year. I agree that 29 was the hardest for me so far as well, we'll see how I feel about forty in November.

Date: 2009-02-13 08:41 pm (UTC)29 was hard for me as well, and 30 I barely felt. You are only as young as you feel. Gosh that sounds cliche'.
Meh, anyway, I hope your day is a good one :)

Date: 2009-02-13 09:06 pm (UTC)I'm 41, and find that the 40's are a great age. So far anyway. You know who you are and really don't take crap from anyone any more.
Of course, I never refer to my age at birthday time anymore. I celebrate the "___ anniversary of my 29th birthday". ;)
So, have a great time celebrating the 11th Anniversary of your 29th birthday!! Hope you have a great long weekend!!!!
