Randomness
Aug. 16th, 2004 09:32 pmIt’s been a while since I put anything up, and I’m not feeling very cohesive at the moment, so I shall assault you with some randomness.
Babylon 5 – I’ve gotten through seasons one through three and am eagerly anticipating getting my hands on season four. I watched the series when it was originally on, though I didn’t really discover a liking for it until it was already in the third season and being bounced around the stations. Getting to watch it in its consecutive entirety is a wonderful thing. So many little details threaded amidst the larger stories that carry from one episode to the next, from one season to the next. What may have seemed like randomness was oh-so-very deliberate.
Movies – Had a Saturday to myself, so I walked down to Hollywood Video and rented some movies.
‘Hellboy’ was okay. I enjoyed it, but I wish they’d shown more of Abe. Of all the characters, he was the one I was most intrigued by and he’s out of the story by the halfway point. Still, I enjoyed it and I’ll watch it again happily.
‘Kill Bill part 2’ was wonderfully fun and it was interesting to compare the first one to the second. While it was obvious that gallons and gallons of fake blood were used to operatic effect during the fight scenes, there was very little Tarantino-esque dialogue. Part 2 loses some of the operatic feel for its fight sequences, but the dialogue is back. There’s only one part in 2 that made me cringe. The end of the fight between the Bride and Elle. Just… ew. ew. ew. ew. All in all, good stuff and I really want to get my hands on the DVDs for myself.
‘Mystic River’ showed me exactly why Sean Penn and Tim Robbins won Oscars for their roles in the film. Very powerful stuff. The moral ambiguity is more than a little disturbing as it seeps through the film, eventually getting under your skin. While the mystery of whodunit gets solved, the movie leaves you with more questions than you get answered.
Work – Things are still going okay with the job. I enjoy the work, and I think I’m good at it, but I am a little slow compared to the other folks, which adds a little bit of stress for me. I keep telling myself to zen out and just do my job as well as I can and let the speed come with time. I don’t want to halfass things. There are some other minor irritations, but this is still fine for now.
Music - Now that I have a steady income, I broke down and rejoined BMG for some new CDs. This is the first time I've bought any new music since I lost a huge chunk of my CD collection (most of my favorites) when my car was broken into. I'm very pleased with what I got: Black Eyed Peas 'Elephunk', Norah Jones, Santana 'Shaman', The Essential Hits of Billy Joel, Los Lonely Boys, and the Original Cast Recording of Avenue Q, which is amazingly fun and wonderful. I'm eagerly looking forward to getting the new Norah Jones as well as Joss Stone soon.
Life – I’ve been feeling a bit sadly wistful lately. Like I’m missing a piece of myself that I’m not sure I’m ever going to find. Perhaps it’s a bit of loneliness, or perhaps just an after effect of the frustration I feel for still being so far behind on things. I’ve been wondering if I wall myself off from things (people and life in general) as a defensive mechanism, but end up hurting myself more than helping. Ah well. It’s rather minor, just a thread running through my emotions lately.
Well, 6:15 am comes very early in the morning, so I am going to head off to sleep.
