I just got myself caught up on Lost tonight. I'm keeping up with Heroes and Lost, but for the most part, I haven't been in a television/dvd watching mood (note to self: cancel the Netflix subscription for the time being). Last Wednesday's episode of Lost was really pretty damn good. I'm always a fan of Hurley episodes, and 'Tricia Tanaka is Dead' was fun.

The thing is, though, it brought something home to me. SOMEONE on the writing staff for Lost has some serious Daddy Issues. Let us, for a moment, consider the Daddy Issues of the characters on Lost:

Jack - Probably the most transparent daddy issues of all. Jack embodies all the typical literary elements of a man trying to live up to and beyond the tarnished image of his own father.

Sawyer - Daddy killed mommy and then committed suicide. That's not a daddy issue, that's a lifetime subscription.

Kate - Real daddy gave her up because mommy wanted to marry a two-bit loser drunk who eventually wanted to molest her. Also the whole reason she's on the run. Blowing the bastard up does tend to irk the law a little bit.

Locke - Daddy conned him into thinking he loved him only to get a kidney from him. I think Locke's daddy still gets the asshole prize.

Jin - Ashamed that his daddy is a lowly fisherman.

Sun - Ashamed that her daddy is a scary mobster. Throw in frightened of mobster daddy too.

Desmond - Daddy-almost-in-law was a total prick and ruined made him run away from the love of his life.

Shannon - Daddy died and forgot to actually note that some of his millions should go to her, so evil step-mommy kept it all. The bitch.

Michael - He was a daddy issue, all by himself.

Finally, Hurley - Daddy was Cheech. Oh, and took off when little Hurley was a skinny kid and gave him eating issues. Not to mention, came back when Hurley was rich, only for the money.

Charlie and Claire are fairly daddy issue free so far, though I heard one suggestion that Claire might be Jack's half-sister, which would give her a whole set of inherited daddy issues. Not to mention, there was that freaky image of Charlie's butcher dad in his last flashback episode. Ana-Lucia didn't have daddy isseus, but she got herself written off before they could get into that. Eko had brother issues, and I'm sure ther was a daddy problem in there somewhere. Boone could be said to have shared Shannon's issues, but she was more his issue.

I'd say the only one who is truly daddy issue free at this point is Sayid.

Wow.. I've been watching Lost and missed half of those!

However, the two brothers?? Eko and whatever his name was.. I don't even recall there being a Daddy for them. Perhaps their problem was that there is no Daddy? Was there a mother even? I seem to remember them being in a Catholic school. Though I only saw that episode once.

Oooh, thanks for this list! I hadn't thought about it before. How fascinating! It will be interesting to see how things unfold from here.

Including Eko in the daddy issues list was a bit of a stretch, but if you figure that he either a. had no daddy, or b. had no parents and was an orphan, you've got some abandonment issues there anyway. They never really focused on them and instead focused on his relationship with his brother.

Sayid is really the only one that haven't shown any family related issues. Though, his family was threatened in a subtly indirect way by the US Army guys who wanted him to help them. His issues were mostly with the military, terrorism and a girl.
