One of 'my' strays just got hit by a car, pretty much right in front of my house.

He was a timid thing, probably just around a year old. With a good home, he'd have been a handsome cat. He was mostly white with a few hand-sized patches of yellow. Of the strays that came by my house, he was one of the regulars, but would never let me get close. He'd sleep on my porch, or eat the food I put out, but he was too skittish to actually be sociable. He'd even run when the other cats came around.

I know this winter was pretty rough on him. He had started looking a little scruffy and I'd caught him sleeping on the sewer vent more than once (the heat from the sewer was warmer than anywhere else).

My roommate blames herself for him getting hit. She'd gone out to throw some garbage out and he bolted off the porch. Next thing she knew, a car was skidding to a stop, there was a thump, and then the car drove off. The cat spasmed once and then was gone. I told her not to take it to heart and it wasn't really her fault. It could have happened at any time.

I took an old shoe box and went out to the street and put his broken body inside. It feels wrong to just put the box in the garbage, but there really isn't much else I can do for him. It doesn't seem fair, or right, but for most of these strays, that defines their whole life.

The poor little guy.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear this. That's really sad. I know you've sort of taken care of those guys the best you can. Sounds like he lived out his nine lives.
