Well, I think it's safe to say that AngCon II was a success.
For those coming in to the story late, a few years ago, I rekindled my passion for gaming by attending a new local con called UnyCon. It was a great time and made me renew my efforts to find a GOOD gaming group. The following year I attended again and had even more fun. I was all set to go again for the third year when they suddenly cancelled it at the last minute. In a fit of pique about this, I declared that I would hold my own convention, so AngCon was born.
Like last year, we started with some non-rpg games for the first half. Unlike last year, though, there wasn't a specific tournament. There really wasn't a game of choice among everyone this year, so it was pretty much a random 'play what you want' situation. I had three tables set up for this purpose. We briefly played Set, but that didn't last too long because, well... I kick ass at it. One round we played, the other two players ended up with eight sets between them. I ended up with fourteen. It was fun and they were all teasing me for it, but it definitely wasn't something we were going to do all night. (For some reason, I get the same reaction when it comes to Pictionary.) Afterwards, some of us broke off to play Carcasonne, while some others played the new Star Wars minis game.
I'd encouraged people to bring fun stuff to give away and luckily we ended up with enough swag to let everyone get something. The prizes ranged from a d20 D&D setting book, a copy of Three Dragon Ante, Pirate socks and chocolate coins, to a really ugly d20 and some random card packs. Everyone seemed to have fun, even if there was 'fighting' over a couple of the items.
The final 'event' of the evening was a roleplaying game done in con style. It was a super hero game using Mutants and Masterminds (2nd edition) where all the characters were teenagers trying to keep their powers secret. I think everyone had a lot of fun with it, and I'm definitely going to translate the whole thing into use for a regular con game. Either Running Gagg or Simcon coming up early next year.
I think next year AngCon III will be in early November. It's a little too difficult to do something like this so close to Christmas, but I'm really glad I was still able to pull it off. Heck, if I can make it happen next year, it'll be one year longer than UnyCon lasted. :)
