Saturday, I got up and started cleaning the house since I was hosting gaming that night. I came into the computer room to do something and looked out the window that looks onto the porch. There was one of the stray cats dining on a dead squirrel.

It was a somewhat disturbing sight, especially since I’m generally as fond of the acrobatic rodents as I am cats. The cat was a bit perturbed at my discovery and he dashed off a few feet to watch me in the window. The squirrel was still dead. Since Marnie sounded like she was getting ready to go to work, I warned her about it so she didn’t freak out. She still freaked out a bit, but not as bad as I expected.

I decided I’d give the cat some time to deal with it and then I’d work up the courage to go dispose of the poor dead squirrel. At some point, though, the cat had apparently dragged his own personal buffet off to more private quarters. The porch still needed to be cleaned off, though, so I went out and took care of that.

The very next morning, though, Marnie informs me that the squirrel is back. (Rudy wanted to know if this meant the squirrel had returned as a zombie.) This time she does sound pretty freaked out. I went out to the porch to take a look and yes, the squirrel, or what’s left of him, is back. If I thought the original sight of the dead squirrel was disturbing, I wasn’t quite prepared for what he’d look like AFTER the cat had finished his meal.

Marnie was all panicked and kept offering to stay and help me clean it up. Since I knew she’d only get in the way, I insisted that she leave. She actually sat in her car for ten minutes watching me on the porch, as if she were afraid of leaving the dead squirrel there. For some reason, this really annoyed me, so I refused to clean it up until she drove off.

Now, the one thing I don’t quite understand about all of this are the cat’s intentions. Did he bring it up onto our porch because it was a safe place to eat his kill? Did he bring it up there to mock my charity and the dry food I put out for the strays? Did he want to mock my cats and their pampered existence? Did he want to scare the chinchilla whose cage can be seen from the window? And why bring the carcass back to us? Was he sharing?

Hopefully, he doesn’t feel the need to share his future hunting successes with us. Blech.
