Live From Gencon!
Aug. 11th, 2006 12:34 amHey everyone! It's me, live at Gencon. I didn't really expect to have Internet access while at the con, but apparently the hotel I'm staying at (which is unexpectedly swanky) has a little 24 hour business nook with two computers. I just got back from my last game, so I'm taking some time to check mail and stuff.
The hotel is really nice. It's a fine looking place with a very upscale feel. The beds are super comfy, though it is odd having to share one with someone. There's even a small pool here that I got to use last night after we'd done some early registration stuff and gone out to dinner. One of the other cool things is that there's also free breakfast in the morning, and it's not just some hokey muffins, juice and coffee. This morning there was scrambled eggs, sausage, pancakes, waffles, in addition to waffles, cereal and all the normal stuff.
My first experience with the dealer room was a bit overwhelming and painful. I made the decision to try and hit the Giants in the Playground booth first day to try and get some of the free stuff. Even though I was in the doors within the first few minutes, I ended up in a line that took me an a hour and a half to reach the booth. My feet really hated me for that one. Angela's do not like standing for that long. It was amusing though, how many people came up to the line and asked, "What's this line for?" When someone would reply, "Order of the Stick" we'd usually get a blank, uncomprehending stare. All in all, I'm glad I waited. I got all three books signed by Rich Burlew with a little drawing in each (Elan in one, Haley in one, and Durkon in another), along with the freebies they were giving out.
After that, I had my first experience with RPGA. It was okay. Not the best roleplaying in the workd, but it wasn't horrible and the group I was with was amusing. I'm a bit perturbed about the fact that we won't get xp until after the con, so I'll be stuck playing my character at 1st level until afterwards, and who knows when I'd ever get to play another event.
When that was done, I hit the dealer room and got to briefly meet Gigi Edgely. I'm such a shy dork. Here I am, talking to a star who played one of my favorite characters on a show I absolutely loved. I think she did more talking than I did. She was nifty, though. Had this absolutely cute Australian accent and was just as bubbly as I expected her to be.
During that run of the dealer room, I also got to get a glimpse at Neverwinter Nights 2. It's looking really cool. The game itself looks gorgeous and they've added some of the character creation stuff I'd missed in NWN1 - sub races, deities, etc. The guy who was demoing it for me (me personally, mind you!) said that the deities section is completely re-writable by the mod writers if they want to do a custom world. The faces aren't as customizable as I'd like, but it's more than it was in the original game. All in all, I'm looking forward to it. It's probably the only thing that will break Sims 2's hold on me.
The last thing of the night was the FanPro Shadowrun tournament. I had fun in that, but it ran too long. I'll get to play in it again on Saturday night. I could play in it tomorrow, but I already signed up for a different game.
Anyway, my feet hate me right now and I hear a bed calling me upstairs.
