GenCon is coming up pretty quick, so I’m starting to get both nervous and excited.

It’s probable at this point that the folks Doug and I were going to room with aren’t going to be able to accommodate us. They’re going as official reps, and aren’t sure they’re going to get to room together. If they get a room together, life is hunky-dory. If they don’t, they can’t exactly spring strangers on the people that are assigned to share with them. They haven’t heard yet what the housing arrangements are going to be, so we’re in a bit of a limbo.

I can try and reserve us a room at one of the official hotels, but there’s a $50 cancellation fee if you do it before August 3rd, and if you do it after that, you have to pay a night’s stay anyway. I just know that if I do that, the other two guys will get housed together and we’ll have a place to stay. The other option is to get a room outside of town at a hotel that’s not taking part in the con rates. The cancellation policy shouldn’t be quite so expensive then. But.. this is GenCon we’re talking about. It’d be pretty hard to find a hotel that isn’t expecting the gaming pilgrimage. (If anyone is going and needs/wants roommates… ;)

The other thing that has me antsy is the schedule of events. Talk about something that’s completely NOT user friendly. Check it out. Each ‘catalog’ is an Excel spreadsheet that’s almost completely unreadable without major manipulation. Since I’ve got some layout experience, it wasn’t too hard for me to merge it into a more readable format. What does anyone else do, though?

Admittedly, they do have a gazillion entries in the event list. I think my ‘modified’ list has 2000+ things listed, and that’s just seminars, workshops and RPGs. I cut out all the anime, filmfest, collectible card games, trade-able card games, historical minis, non-historical minis, LARPs, and some other miscellaneous categories. It’s more than a little overwhelming, which was compounded by the unfriendliness of the lists themselves.

All things said, though, I am really looking forward to going. I haven’t gotten to take a road trip in forever. Indy’s a long drive from here, but pretty easy to get to – Head West on 90, hang a left at Cleveland, hang a right at Columbus, and keep on going until you run into this big city in the middle of nowhere. And, of course, once we’re there, we get to revel in the joys of geekdom. Mmmm. So Geeky.
