Christmas Is Coming
Dec. 19th, 2005 12:09 amLast night while decorating the tree, my friends’ five-year old daughter turned to me and asked, “Ang, why do you have a Christmas Tree if you don’t have any kids? Santa only gives presents to kids, right?” Out of the mouths of babes.
I got thinking about that. Why do I put up a Christmas tree? Perhaps it’s an homage to the joy and wonder that is still in the holiday for me. Perhaps it’s done in part for the hope of having a family of my own someday. Perhaps both. I know that I love having small children in my life now, even if they only visit. For them, I make sure we make an event of putting up the tree and letting them help me with decorations.
Anyway..
This has been an odd holiday season. On one hand I’m actually well prepared for Christmas this year. This is the first Christmas I’ve been employed in a while, so I’ve got huge chunks of my shopping done and there’s only a couple of last minute things I’ll need to be getting with the paycheck that comes this week. On the other hand, though, I *feel* like I’m running incredibly behind.
I’m blaming this on the cold or flu or whatever it was I got right after Thanksgiving. That wiped me out energy wise big time. Most of my major shopping was done online, so I could do that huddled in front of the computer, cursing my misery and just hitting the ‘buy’ button. So, the part that’s usually hard (especially without a car) has actually been easy, and what was usually easy has been hard.
It’s only been recently that I finally got the Christmas decorations up. This is horribly late for me. Usually the decorations come out the weekend after Thanksgiving and then a tree goes up a couple of weeks later. This year, nothing went up until last weekend, and that was only a couple of things. Christmas Cards still need to be finished up, and I didn’t have enough time to do –all- the cookie baking this weekend. I’m going to have to squeeze in a couple of batches after work (Oatmeal Scotchies and Oatmeal Raisin). The cards I MUST get out by Wednesday, so that’s more stuff I need to get done soon.
