The Middle Ages
Feb. 14th, 2005 12:54 amThirty-six. The age I have declared is officially 'middle aged'.
About a month ago, I was stressing about this particular birthday. I seem to do that every so often. A month or so before my birthday, I'll get a touch melancholy about getting older, lingering over that which I haven't yet accomplished or the places my life hasn't gone that I had hoped it will. Usually by the time my birthday actually gets here (February 13th - I'm posting late), I'll be okay with it all. I'm still a touch disturbed that I am now closer to 40 than 30, but that is something I'm going to have to get used to.
Of course, I certainly don't -feel- middle aged. Perhaps I am a little calmer than I was in my twenties, but there honestly doesn't seem to be that much difference between then and thirty-six. Luckily, I am very fond of the number 36. It's close to 360, which represents both the years at Broadway as well as things coming full circle. Perhaps this means the year will see some changes for the better. It would be nice to not feel like I'm coasting through yet another year on autopilot with the inability to actually make any effective changes.
On a more practical note, tonight's birthday dinner was quite good. We went to the Pomodoro Grill & Wine Bar. I'm not into wine, but I wanted something Italian-ish. Most of us ended up getting pizza, though Dr. Angela got pasta. I even got a piece of cake with a candle in it. There were no annoying wait staff to come sing me Happy Birthday, but my friends made up for that lack by singing loudly enough for everyone nearby to know what was going on.
Unexpectedly, I did get some birthday 'loot'. Heidianna and Scott got me a nifty frame with a picture of a really cool dragon cross-stitch that Heidianna is working on. Dr. Angela got me a gift card to Target, one of my all time favorite stores. And TJ and Deb took me to the gaming store where I got to pick out whatever I wanted. It was a toss up between the core rules to the new World of Darkness, Shadowrun 3rd edition, or GURPS 4th edition. The only copy of Shadowrun they had was mangled a bit, so that was tossed out. TJ then talked me out of WoD and into GURPS. It was very cool of all of them.
I did disappoint a certain four-year-old by having an adult dinner instead of an all-ages party. After all, in Raina's mind, today was 'Ang's Birthday Party', which meant she needed to pick out one of her toys and wrap it for me. She was quite cross that she wasn't going to get to see me today. I'll have to make it up later in the week.
